Nib
Nib is a typeface that has developed in response to a typographic tradition closely linked to the place and culture from which I come. Ireland is not a country commonly associated with graphic design and typography, but it does possess a very distinctive typographic form known as the ‘Irish Type’. The subject of Irelands typographic ‘identity’ provides the main inspiration behind my decision to undertake type design on this MA course. The combination of the subjects’ complex historical context, the unusual position of the Irish Type as a ‘National Type’ and the subsequent questions raised by its existence left me with a desire to articulate my own typographic response to the subject. The result of this process is Nib, a small, but growing, family of text faces available in both serif and sans, in two cuts, book and medium.
