THE SPINE
A Study in Book Architecture.
They say that a finished book is a corpse and the observer can only see the remains of all the possibilities the bookmaker got to know in the process. A bookbinder has to choose the right tools, materials and techniques to create a perfect book. Bookbinding as every other craft depends on practice and perfectionism. I chose to use this vehicle to express the metaphor of imperfection.
The imperfect human body and especially the distorted human spine is the inspiration behind a series of exposed spine books. The human spine makes our body stand up; the book spine holds the pages of the book together.
Inventing my own stitching technique I bound several “distorted” but perfectly functioning books. The blank page is a canvas to support light and shadow, shape being the most important element.
I investigate the format, the grid and the sequence of pages in a book structure. My tools; the paper, the thread, the space.
