re. dance and design

A dance expresses itself through movement in time and space. Its essence is thus intrinsically linked to its form. Is there a way to transpose this expression onto a two-dimensional and static surface such as a poster or pages of a book? Moreover, can graphic design reveal hidden features of a dance performance, or maybe even enhance the experience?
I addressed these questions in several experiments. In one of these, the shadows of the dancer’s movement were recorded from multiple screens. Presenting them next to each other is an attempt towards re-mapping the space of the dance. By this, the intrinsic feature space receives explicit attention. A second experiment tried to capture rhythm and the dimension of time by using strobe photography, whereas a third experiment aimed at reducing the spatial dimensions of the dance. Therefore, always that side of the stage is shown that currently conveyed the most expression.
