Leave to remain: Memories of the Zimbabwean Diaspora
Over the year’s great numbers of Zimbabweans have migrated to
different countries in search of a new beginning, running away from
the turmoil that has gripped the country.
Since coming to the UK three years ago I have gone through many
changes. It has been difficult to adapt and deal with changes to my
identity and culture. All I have from my previous life are the
memories and the few objects that I brought with me.
I interviewed some Zimbabweans who have also migrated in order
to find out if they had shared my experience and photographed
them with their fondest memories. The everyday objects they
brought with them have become sacred having been touched or
given by a loved one who in some cases have passed away. Some
Zimbabweans face an uncertain future as they have pending cases
of asylum and others do not have legal status.
