Crash is a versatile term. Semantically it is located between the phenomena accident and spectacle: Crashes involve an uncontrollable destructive power, they are an inevitable, indomitable and inescapable contingency in any thinkable system and they have proven extremely attractive to the mass media. The concept of crash is applied not only in context of the spontaneous materialistic deformation of metal and concrete, in its extensive metaphoricity it is also commonly used in terms of software malfunction, exceptional natural disasters, and last but not least in context of the holistic failure that recently emerged in the financial sector. More than just mere an immediate, descriptive expression the crash as a phenomenon reveals other interrelations within its (our) entire system than the mass media coverage may suggest.
