Macro and Micro Structures
Urban Dynamics in Chaos and Order

The perception of a city is one of order. However beneath the surface there is chaos, blurring the boundaries between public and private spaces.

A lateral city model has been translated into the electronic space, through manipulating and visualizing macro and micro scales. Moving closer towards the micro scale the chaos symbolized by privacy and individuality becomes more apparent. This notion is captured by the analogue element of photography, documenting individual spaces, which arrange and cluster within the cellular structure. The macro is represented by digital programming. Code and user interaction are responsible for a self-organizing emergent structure. At a certain level of growth the structure reaches a critical threshold at the ‘edge of chaos’, echoing the urban core reaching a critical mass of architectural entities. Consequently the domestic entities start to reposition within the clusters, whilst simultaneously cells start to sprawl outward.

Through shifts between macro and micro perspectives, an awareness of the individuals’ integral role in the evolutionary process of urban organisms is gained. This challenges ideas of urban life, community and domesticity and the notion of architecture in the era of electronic space.
