CHURCH GOING
Southwark Cathedral: Interior, exterior and surroundings

London is a hectic city, choking with activity, noise and distraction. Although a non-Christian I oddly love hanging about in its churches - they provide a space to go and sit, more often than not, in serenity and solitude.

From the street a city church drenched in years of grime can easily go unnoticed, blending in spectacularly well with the greyness of the pavement and road. The experience entering the building however can be unexpectedly shocking and strangely emotional - a quality of light suffuses the interior which defies anything the façade portends.

My recent work has documented the inner and outer life of Southwark Cathedral. Outside the cathedral looks north onto the rushing Thames while nestling up alongside glossy skyscrapers and thunderous iron railway bridges. Inside, protected by vast walls and windows the atmosphere softens and stills, a sanctuary to silence and refuge to all who enter.
